chhinnamastā (Sanskrit: छिन्नमस्ता), meaning “She Whose Head is Severed,” is a Hindu goddess depicted self-decapitating, with streams of blood nourishing her own head. This imagery symbolises the transcendence of ego, the cyclical nature of life and death, and the awakening of spiritual energy. In my own research, I am particularly drawn to the interplay between Śaiva and Buddhist traditions, and Chhinnamastā’s complex iconography and rituals illuminate these connections.
