2025 stoneware clay, glaze, hand-built 25cm x 13cm x 4.5cm
Symbiosis II (2025) is a hand-built stoneware sculpture, finished with glaze to highlight its surface and form. Often, my ideas emerge through the process of working with clay: I approach the material, see where it leads, and later reflect, name, and consider its meaning.
It is part of a series of pieces that circle around the same impulse. Symbiosis as the result of meeting another version of oneself. Almost like looking into a mirror and realising that the reflection has shifted. Identity moves, rearranges, grows unfamiliar for a moment.
I think of it in a way that reminds me of Ursula Le Guin, of how she writes about change as something quiet and patient, something shaped through contact and relation. In this piece, that shift happens through the encounter with oneself. A slow reconfiguring that begins simply by noticing that we are not exactly the same as before.
